Gizmo – 1st Look HP Windows 7 Slate

Gizmo Ep05 – Get the first look at photos from the unveiling of Microsoft and hp’s Windows 7 Slate. It is a tablet that is powered by the multi-touch features of Windows 7 and features a few interesting modes like: movie mode, reading mode, and pc mode. The interesting part is seemingly a tie-up with Amazon (be it with Microsoft, HP or both were not sure.) Ballmer demoed the Amazon PC reader on the HP Slate, and the reader will ship as standard with the Slate. Release date: later this year, and the price: about the same as a mobile phone. Our guess, pre-Christmas and around the 0-0 mark.

    The HP slate is cool
    BUT
    Your finger is A LOT bigger than a cursor so I’m betting that precise input is still a big problem. Notice that none of these demos actually show off Windows 7 in action. The only thing I’ve seen is an eBook reader, and a video already qued up. I’ve not seen any demos of power point, web browsing, excel, word processing, email, or game play. How do you do them with your finger? And what about 3rd party titles that aren’t designed for a touch UI?

    still, doesnt make it any better then a slate :p
    iwork = office?
    i doubt the ipad can go on youtube for example (desktop) or play pc games (i don’t think slate will do any better, but atleast you can try to play games on it xd). And it will probably require a pc or mac to use all it’s functions (like the ipod), while the slate IS a PC. And it’s apps are limited to what the appstore offers, while you can install every pc program on the slate. and a pc (slate) can do just about everything

    iPad = Oversized iPod touch = Epic fail… You can actually read ebooks on the itouch if you get that app. Just because it looks better, that won’t make the actual device better. Face it, the iPad fails, BAD…

  4. spencert94 Says:

    @roadkill ohh lol yeah that makes more sense. The ipad can still do everything a full operating system can it just does it differently. the ipad does a lot of key things very well, while the slate can do alot of stuff very crappily. as for two things the ipad can do that the i touch can’t. iwork, ibook those are the things that you actually can’t do on an itouch, but the photo viewing application, the calander, and the mail are completely redone for a much more immersive experience.

  5. Roadkill263732 Says:

    no, no, no, i mean the ipAd doesnt fit in ur pocket XD
    but it can’t do half the things a slate can. Wanna know why?
    its running full windows seven. So it can do everything a PC can, only less effectively (cuz you can’t put uber cpu’s/gpu’s/etc. in something this small) and the ipad can’t do much more then what an itouch can. So when you say better functionality, can you name 1 or 2 things the ipad can and itouch can’t?

    @Parrotheader
    That is true ;)

  7. adonian Says:

    @WordWithCriss
    wow, thats crazy, i’m glad i got the contract WHEW!

    I am tempted to get the archos 9 still, it’s $550, and tax return is on it’s way already ;)

  8. WordWithCriss Says:

    @adonian you got your iphone with a contract, the iphone alone i believe runs between 600 to 800, i think thats the price when it first came out. its still no were near 200 without contract though

  9. Parrotheader Says:

    @adonian Your iPhone was subsidized by the cost of your phone contract. If you bought it without a contract it would be $600. So yes, ~$800 is a very reasonable price for a device like this. Especially since this is a full-fledged computer and not just an smartphone-class device.

  10. adonian Says:

    I love the “will cost as much as a mobile phone”… excuse the fuck out of me?!?! An $800+ mobile phone?! My iPhone was only $200.

    I still want one, but only if it as cheap as a mobile phone ;)

  11. sillystuff333 Says:

    @Anton338 a- god damn- men!!!! its exciting to hear someone with a right mind!!

  12. wiseman85 Says:

    crappier?…..how so?

  13. spencert94 Says:

    you should watch the keynote for it thats when i realized i actually wanted one. before i was disappointed, but while using my ipod touch i realized how nice it would be to have some of the features that the ipad has

  14. BratPAQ Says:

    @spencert94 wow, comparing the iPad to HP slate? you must be a really delusional fanboy. i got 2 words for you “flash” and “multitasking”

  15. Anton338 Says:

    ok well now THIS is a tablet!!
    apple’s ipad can suck its dick!

  16. quest8899 Says:

    i like how it has windows 7 built in and not a phone os like the ipad, it has the ability to play flash video

  17. 4atir Says:

    Why is everyone hung up on the keyboard? Either you want the mobility and convenience of smart touch or you want to sit down and type. If you want a keyboard, bluetooth technology allows you to hook up an ergonomic full size wireless keyboard (and mouse if you want it) and you start typing. If you want to take it with you and type, then what you really want is the smart touch QWERTY keyboard anyway, or else, hook up a more compact and portable keyboard once you get to your destination.

  18. philvia Says:

    i dont think you know what a tablet pc is….

  19. philvia Says:

    haha, like what?

  20. ericown Says:

    just a touch screen laptop what so special

  21. spencert94 Says:

    @philvia well yes that would easily beat out the hp slate in my opinion but that isn’t exactly what the ipad is it is much more than just a bigger ipod

  22. spencert94 Says:

    well first of all the ipod definitely fits in my pocket so you must have really tiny pockets, and second the ipad may look like an oversized ipod touch but also has much more horse power and better functionality. and from the things I have seen of the hp slate lt simply looks like a smaller crappier ipad.

  23. philvia Says:

    so you would rather have… what exactly? a larger ipod touch?

  24. SuperBlueGiraffe Says:

    Yeah but the ipads got a different processor, it’s not just bumped up by 200mhz.

    Anyway the slate does look pretty cool.

  25. Roadkill263732 Says:

    ohyeah? well the ipad is an oversized ipod touch.. without a keyboard (just like an ipod that doesnt fit in ur pocket)
