The curtain has been raised (slightly) on the next installment of Microsoft’s Windows operating system – Windows 7.
Microsoft hope it will bring the internet, mobile phone and PC closer together. But reviews have so far been mixed, although reviewers have been limited to trying the (pre-beta version).
The full version is expected to be capable of working with a touchscreen screen, navigating documents and the Web similar to Apple’s iPhone. It is officially released at the end of 2009.
“I have seen the future, and it is bleak. Windows 7, the next big version, the one that was supposed to fix everything that was wrong with Vista, is here (at least in pre-beta form), and I can now say – with some confidence – that Microsoft has once again dropped the ball.
“Overall, I’m extremely disappointed with Windows 7. Far from atoning for Vista’s sins, Windows 7 simply carries them forward, visiting them upon yet another generation. Windows 7 is no panacea. Rather, it’s just more of the same: slow, bloated, and frustrating as hell.”
“When it comes to Windows 7, Microsoft hasn’t just learned from the mistakes of Windows Vista. It has picked up a thing or two from Apple’s OS X, judging by first impressions.
“It’s not clear how big the changes are so far. If you put the beta-build of Windows 7 side-by-side with Windows Vista, you’d be hard-pressed to spot the differences. Yes, some of the icons look slightly different and there’s no sidebar, but it’s essentially still the Vista look and feel. But that changes when you start to use Windows 7.
“For a start the OS won’t nag you as much; many notifications are banished to a control panel, you get to approve icons before they show up in the system tray and Microsoft has reined in Vista’s useful but annoying UAC prompts; you can choose which ones you want to see or turn them off altogether.”
“Initially Windows 7 looks similar to Vista, but there a lot of new features that have been added. Under the skin, Microsoft has been working hard. Boot times have been reduced, and certainly the review laptop Microsoft provided has a fairly snappy boot time.
“Microsoft has been working with OEMs to improve battery life – simple things such as reducing the timer frequency can improve battery life by up to 10 per cent. The networking stack has had new diagnostics added to help users figure out exactly where the problem lies.
“So, is this all a big deal? It’s not a change to the fundamental core of Windows, and most of the improvements sound relatively small. But taken together, they seem to address many of the issues people have had for Windows. I’m looking forward to trying it out, starting this afternoon.”

Worked on win since 3.1v. Used 95,98,2000,XP, Vista. hmm NO THANKS. Now about a half year I’m using Ubuntu for my work and Win for games only. I was sceptical about linux, but when started to use it more I’ve found it more user friendly and highly customizable. Win made no changes since 95. It’s all the same except UI tweaks and huge resource usage. It’s not without bugs or security problems. Win and Linux have bugs. It is normal. But why should I pay for bugs when I can have them for FREE ?
at 10:49 am
By the way. Linux sometimes (especially with new hardware) have drivers compatability problems. It’s normal because these drivers in most cases are reverse engineered. But Win (especially new versions) constantly have drivers compatability problems. Even when these drivers are written for Win. Is it not a shame for a such huge company like Microsoft with billions of $ behind ? You say Windows has more software than linux because of more win users.. it’s a myth. 80% of all this software is crap.

Nice video, imo dual boot over all
win 7 + ubuntu = ftw

I love ubuntu but it just pisses me off when I have to open wine to run a fucking .exe and everything is an .exe nowadays.

@radkelot It’s called “RocketDock”
at 10:49 am
i c dead space 5 star
at 10:49 am
yeah!, me too, i installed it in my laptop 5 months ago, and i don’t regret it, but i miss the bsod. XD

why is he using rocket dock when the new win7 taskbar is essentially a dock?
at 10:49 am
I downloaded a number of distros and will give them a try this coming week to check out the new features. Last time, I played with Linux was one year ago.
I am planning to dual boot on a Macbook Pro which has XP and Mac OS already…

I have a question. How do you get that bar with the icons in windows 7?
at 10:49 am
Yeah thats true, but the main stream OS is windows. Can Linux users tell me what is the point of a software company to develop a program which is open source? They give the program to you for free and sell support, what is there is no or very little need for support? And if any bugs are found they will just be fixed by the community. Its like if Mercedes gave you blueprints to their cars. Linux is great for a free OS but people and companies will always prefer Windows.

DELL sells laptops with Ubuntu, and i remember when i bought my laptop had linux preinstalled
at 10:49 am
i have ubuntu 9.10.. i didn’t installed any drivers and all my hardware works out of the box including my cannon scanner my generic webcam and my hp printer. the only thing i did “install” was the graphic driver for my nvidia card, i said ‘install’ because i had to click to times

I personally love linux but come on guys; lets be realistic. If you are buying a Printer or a webcam finding a driver for it to run on Linux can be so daunting that you just want to quit. For Windows, it will be widely compatible. For Mac, to an extent. Linux totally loses with it comes to peripheral devices compatibilities. It is great in many other aspects. I still love to explore linux every now and then and learn about the new versions and distros but use windows heavily.

@MoonLightFacade: I dont think that the “super bar” in windows 7 was meant to be highly customisable, just something to save space on the task bar and get people who just like the big icons at the bottom of the screen to use windows instead of Mac, this also helps Microsoft get an advantage over Apple. There are people who prefer eye candy over usability out there, plenty of them. The retail OS world is about business, which is why companies will not look at Linux for a long time to come.

@FOA525
Linux is less of a recourse hog. It would run better on your system no doubt about it. You’d be suprised what Linux can do with an old, or even new system. If you want to try dual booting so you can try Linux you can PM me, or if you have questions.
at 10:49 am
Linux is VERY impressive with it’s 3D animations, but i thing you need to have a really good computer for it to run smoothly, me personally, i have w7, and i am completly amazed with it. Super fast! Does not require alot of disk space what so ever. I’d love to see Linux on my computer, how it runs. But i think it would lag alot. From my point of view w7 is better.

…which in reality have been done for the past few years BEFORE they had even announced the idea for their O.S.
The new dock in Windows 7 is a total example of this. It’s so primitive, too, and I’m not talking aesthetic appeal here either; where’s the search effect that GNOME-DO provides? Where’s the customization and screenlet ability of Cairo-Dock?
at 10:49 am
That’s shitty logic, though, because everyone uses PC’s for different things. What you’re basically saying is that Windows is above all because it supports the most revenue generating pieces of software for computers. This may be true, but that does not in anyway make it higher than Linux or Mac. Windows is good for some things, and I’m not fully against it either.
What Microsoft has become is the issue; the cheat the shit out of Windows users, releasing new things which in reality

kalasnikov47:
What you just wrote here sounded so fucking totalitarian it made my eyes bleed.
at 10:49 am
That’s not the point; the point is what you can do with it, and how restrictive (and Christ all mighty! Spendy as Hell!) Windows is.
They both have their ups and downs, but Linux works for me, for what I want to do, and I’m satisfied with it. If you like Windows, then by all means, use Windows. Just know that in the end MS is milking the shit out of everything you see. Just the little things like MSN are a joke.
at 10:49 am
I don’t think Steam works on Mac OS X.
at 10:49 am
@NDogg15 im pretty sure valve makes there games for all three operating systems.
at 10:49 am
Okay, Ubuntu looks really cool…
… but can it play TF2?

I think open office has a thousand miles to go before its nearly as good as Microsoft Office, especially in the macro language, usability and overall GUI. MS Office is professional where as Open Office is sufficient for a home/school. Office user interfirence has always been much better then in open office.
As for Blender, from the point of view that I work with 3D graphics every day and anyone else who does, I think that I dont even have to get in to detail, Blender is not even close to 3DS.
